Organisational Background

Show Me Your Number (SMYN) is a youth-focused initiative that empowers Adolescent and Young People (AYP) through creative, peer-led approaches to improve awareness and access to services related to HIV prevention, SRHR, gender-based violence, and youth development. SMYN delivers holistic services in community safe spaces with an emphasis on psychosocial support and layered interventions that foster well-being, resilience, and self-efficacy.

Position Summary

The Social Worker will provide professional psychosocial support to both in-school and out-of-school youth participating in SMYN programs. The role includes overseeing the operations of community safe spaces, supervising frontline community team members, and ensuring the effective implementation of counselling services and wellness activities in line with the SMYN model.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and supportive supervision to community teams, ensuring daily operational goals are achieved.
  • Oversee the rollout and management of daily Safe Space activities, including development of structured schedules.
  • Screen, identify, and provide professional counselling and psychosocial support to AYPs facing challenges.
  • Facilitate referral pathways for at-risk individuals and follow up on care and support interventions.
  • Deliver orientation and training to various community team members including SAWs, Peer Group Trainers (PGTs), Assistant Coaches (ACs), Child and Youth Care Workers (CYCWs), Community Care Givers (CCGs), Mobilisation Facilitators (MFs), and other support staff.
  • Attend stakeholder forums, community meetings, and strengthen partnerships with local services and schools.
  • Consolidate monthly and quarterly community reports from field teams for management review.
  • Uphold ethical social work practices in line with SACSSP guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree in social work or equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA.
  • Current registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ social work experience involving case management post-registration.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working directly with Adolescents and Youth in community or school settings.
  • Valid Police Clearance Certificate.
  • Valid drivers Licence (required)

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of social work principles, ethics, and intervention models.
  • Strong ability to manage individual and group counselling sessions.
  • Excellent writing skills for compiling reports and documenting case notes.
  • Good communication, active listening, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong leadership, people management, and mentoring capabilities.
  • Ability to manage stakeholder relationships and support networks.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and adaptability.
