Purpose of the Role
The Professional Nurses will support the implementation of the AYP (Adolescent and Young People) Programme by providing direct clinical services for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) and adolescent boys and young men (ABYM) aged 15–24, both in school and out of school. The nurses will ensure youth-friendly, high-quality HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and gender-based violence (GBV) services are accessible and effectively delivered at facility and community levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide youth-friendly health services at facility and outreach sites, including HIV testing, PrEP initiation, STI screening, contraceptive services, and GBV screening.
• Conduct wellness talks, group education sessions, and demand creation activities in schools and community settings.
• Support community outreach efforts to reach AGYW and ABYM, including mobile service delivery.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records and support data collection and reporting activities.
• Collaborate with social workers, peer educators, and other programme staff to deliver comprehensive care packages.
• Provide support for health calendar events, campaigns, and stakeholder engagements.
• Identify and refer vulnerable or high-risk adolescents for additional psychosocial or clinical support services.
• Participate in ongoing capacity building, supervision, and programme review activities.
Skills Requirements / Competencies
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with adolescents and youth.
• Clinical competency in HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health services.
• Good organisational and time-management skills.
• Computer literacy and report writing skills.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and multicultural environments.
• Flexibility and willingness to travel to schools and communities.
Educational Qualifications and Experience Required
• Professional Nurse Qualification. A diploma/certificate in Primary Health Care or B Cur degree is an advantage.
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience, preferably in HIV, TB, or SRH service delivery.
• NIMART trained.
• Previous experience working with adolescents and youth in a clinical or outreach setting is highly desirable.
• Valid driver’s license is an advantage.
